The WZB Berlin Social Science Center’s Global Governance unit in the research area International Politics and Law (Director: Prof. Dr. Michael Zürn) is seeking to employ two

research fellows (m/f/x)

for the project on “Towards a Typology of Contestations,” which operates within the Cluster of Excellence “Contestations of Liberal Script” (SCRIPTS) and is led by Prof. Dr. Stefan Gosepath and Prof. Dr. Michael Zürn.

The employment is to start preferably on 1st September 2019 for a period of three years and it covers 65% of regular working hours (25.35 hours per week). It is possible to obtain a doctoral degree within the framework of membership of the Berlin Graduate School for Global and Transregional Studies (BGTS).

The Cluster of Excellence, SCRIPTS, analyzes the contemporary controversies about the liberal order from a historical, global, and comparative perspective. It connects the academic expertise in the social sciences and area studies in Berlin, collaborates with research institutions in all world regions, and maintains cooperative ties with major political, cultural, and social institutions (http://www.scripts-berlin.eu).

Besides the WZB, the Cluster of Excellence includes the Freie Universität Berlin (as the applicant university), the Humboldt University of Berlin, the Hertie School of Governance, the Centre for East European and International Studies, the German Institute for Economic Research, the German Institute of Global and Area Studies, and the Leibniz Centre for Modern Oriental Studies.

The position is embedded in the project ”Towards a Typology of Contestations”. The project is dedicated to the challenges of the liberal script. Especially over the last five years, there has been an authoritarian recovery at the state level; a surge in authoritarian populist parties in consolidated democracies; many transnational social movements, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and even some international NGOs questioning neoliberal hegemony; and abundant local movements that reject the urgency of the global. The aim of the project is to create a set of typologies in order to:

  • to give an overview of the diversity and relative strength of the contestants versus the liberal script,
  • create a phenomenology of current contestants and connect them,
  • establish a typology that allows investigating the causes and consequences of the challenges (contestations) of the liberal script.

Tasks:

  • Empirical surveys on the contestants, their normative program and strategies,
  • Contribution to the conceptual development of the project,
  • Participation in joint publications,
  • Presentation of the project results in workshops and conferences.

Conditions:

  • Very good knowledge of Political Sociology, Comparative Politics, International Relations, or Political Theory,
  • Good knowledge of qualitative methods (e.g., of qualitative interviews) and/or quantitative methods (e.g., content analysis) in the social sciences,
  • Very good final marks (Master’s or equivalent) in Political Science, International Relations, Sociology, or Philosophy,
  • Very good command of English,
  • Initial experience with stakeholder surveys and/or experience in using records such as democracy indices.

Remuneration: Salary group E13 in accordance with German Public Service Wage Agreement (TVöD).

Equally well qualified disabled persons will be given priority. The WZB expressly invites women and people with an immigrant background to apply.

Applications (including letter of motivation with reference to the topic of the project, tabular curriculum vitae, copies of certificates, Master's certificate, as well as contacts of two referees) are to be e-mailed to the following address in the form of one single PDF file by 8th July 2019:

Barçın Uluışık <barcin.uluisik@wzb.eu>

Interviews will be held in Berlin on the 5th August 2019.
