Basic Function of the Role:
Teagasc seeks to recruit an enthusiastic, ambitious post-doctoral scientist to an APC Microbiome Ireland funded position (apc.ucc.ie). The successful candidate will have experience the analysis of shotgun microbiome data from multiple sources and the generation of outputs from that data, in particular through the assembly and analysis of metagenome-associated genomes (MAGs), including through the comparison and optimisation of pipelines for MAG assembly, analysis and comparison with other MAGs and genomes. The successful candidate will have a track record in this area of analysis across a variety of microbiomes.
Duties & Responsibilities specific to the role:
•Responsible for the assembly and analysis of MAGs from shotgun metagenomic data.
•Responsible for comparing and improving different MAG-related tools and for phylogenetic analysis of MAGs and related genomes.
•Responsible for specific projects but also be willing to assist with analysis of data from APC colleagues and collaborators.
•Be willing to regularly upskill, including through attending workshops and training courses, in this and related areas.
•Engage in Education and Public Engagement activities.

•PhD in Microbiology, Biochemistry, Genetics, Computational Biology, Bioinformatics or related relevant discipline.
•Relevant research experience not to exceed 3 years’ post-PhD.
•Experience in working with 'omics' data.
•Experience in setting own research agenda.
