Additional information

In the heart of Europe, just 1h20 by train from Paris, 1h30 from Amsterdam and 1h50 from London and Cologne, Brussels offers all the advantages of a capital city and the quality of life of a large and lively town.  The University campuses are located within easy reach of the city centre.

As a multicultural university with almost one third of students and researchers coming from abroad, international relations is a daily reality for the Université libre de Bruxelles, just as it is for Brussels, one of the world's most cosmopolitan cities. As an institution actively open to Europe and to the world, the Université libre de Bruxelles has set up a number of agreements, collaborations and privileged partnerships with some of the world's top universities.

Four scientific Nobel Prizes, one Nobel Peace Prize, one Fields Medal, three Wolf Prizes, two Marie Curie Prizes and numerous other awards are further evidence of the University's longstanding tradition of excellence. The Université libre de Bruxelles is an active member of the European Research Area (ERA) and has been involved in almost 130 projects financed by the 7th European Framework Programme. To date, the Université libre de Bruxelles has hosted 21 recipients of exclusive European Research Council (ERC)  grants - 11 Starting Grants, 4 Consolidator Grants and 6 Advanced Grants -, together with 17 individual Marie Curie researchers. Moreover, the University's Institute for European Studies is recognized as a “Jean Monnet European research centre” for its work on European integration.

With its 13 faculties, school and institute the Université libre de Bruxelles covers all disciplines, closely combining teaching and research. It offers over 40 Bachelor programmes, 247 Master programmes (Masters and Specialized Masters)and 19 Doctoral programmes, involving almost 2000 PhD candidates, in all fields. One of the University's main aims is to give its students both a solid foundation in critical thinking and a taste for research, while at the same time catering to the needs of new publics.

Since its foundation in 1834, the Université libre de Bruxelles has been closely involved in the ongoing debate on critical thinking and freedom, with regard to equal opportunities, social issues or opposition to dictatorships and other nationalist tendencies. Based on the principle of freethought that postulates independent judgement and the rejection of any argument from authority, the University remains true to its original ideals: an institution that is not harnessed by constraints, firmly committed to the defence of democratic and humanist values.
